Who Was Medusa
Medusa was a monster, one of the Gorgon sisters and daughter of Phorkys and Keto, the children of Gaea (Earth) and Oceanus (Ocean). She had the face of an ugly woman with snakes instead of hair; anyone who looked into her eyes was immediately turned to stone. Her sisters were Sthenno and Euryale, but Medusa was the only mortal of the three.
She was originally a golden-haired, fair maiden, who, as a priestess of Athena, was devoted to a life of celibacy; however, after being wooed by Poseidon and falling for him, she forgot her vows and married him. For this offence, she was punished by the goddess in a most terrible manner. Each wavy lock of the beautiful hair that had charmed her husband was changed into a venomous snake; her once gentle, love-inspiring eyes turned into blood-shot, furious orbs, which excited fear and disgust in the mind of the onlooker; whilst her former roseate hue and milk-white skin assumed a loathsome greenish tinge.
Seeing herself transformed into such a repulsive creature, Medusa fled her home, never to return. Wandering about, abhorred, dreaded, and shunned by the rest of the world, she turned into a character worthy of her outer appearance. In her despair, she fled to Africa, where, while wandering restlessly from place to place, young snakes dropped from her hair; that is how, according to the ancient Greeks, Africa became a hotbed of venomous reptiles. With the curse of Athena upon her, she turned into stone whom ever she gazed upon, till at last, after a life of nameless misery, deliverance came to her in the shape of death, at the hands of Perseus. I think most photographers have done or are planning to a shoot based upon this character. I did my first one a few years ago and the photographs attached are from that shoot. I made my own head piece from wire and foam. Attaching the rubber bendable snakes of varying lengths using thin wire. The only mistake I made here, was using the wrong type of gold paint as it NEVER dried, so things got a little messy when placing it on the models head. The makeup artist Charley Payne performed her magic and created a green/gold scaly look. That added with a gold & brown basque designed & made by Misty Couture plus some extraordinary eye makeup, tattoos, SFX contacts and fang teeth, finished of the look to a tee. The makeup applied took half a day and the actual shoot another 4 hrs. The shoot was also performed for Photoshoot Magazine (issue 6) which included an in-depth article on the whole team involved in the shoot.
The shoot was held in my UK studio as we needed quite a bit space to run this project. By the end of the day we were all absolutely knackered but, very pleased with the finished product.

This project was completed in the summer of 2015 and I am now planning an even more detailed Medusa project, involving an even more intricate head piece as well as body armour. I also wish to make the character more erotic as many of the films made about Medusa portray her in this way, ie evil and erotic. I will also add a little twist on the look and feel of the character. This look will hopefully be revealed at the NEC Photography 2019 show on the live stage under Photoshoot Magazine.
